Exploring Velay

Le Puy-en-Velay is at the crossroads of major hiking trails. Here you can set off in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson along a route taking in volcanoes, hills and valleys, and where you can meet literature fans, but many other people besides!

You will see the Velay’s vast volcanic plains right from the start. At the sources of the River Loire and the Allier, Velay features striking mountain panoramas on the way to Coubon and Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille.

The Stevenson Trail gives energetic hikers a wide range of breathtaking geological features to enjoy. Between the Devès mountain range to the west and Mont Mézenc to the east, the volcanic history of the region is plain to see. Rocky peaks, basalt lava flows, craters – the past is present at every step.

Lake Bouchet is not to be missed. Imagine a lake in a 300,000 year-old crater with a circumference of  3 km: a huge, perfectly outlined volcanic circle at the limits of the pine forest.
